my evening gown isn't red!
taken from yahoo news - when men see red, they see hot: study
WASHINGTON (AFP) - - The popular ballad "Lady in Red" is poised to take on a whole new meaning: a study published Tuesday showed that the color red makes men see women as hotter or, more scientifically put, more attractive.
Researchers from the University of Rochester in New York conducted five psychological experiments to demonstrate that the color red makes men feel more amorous toward women.
In the experiments, groups of young men looked briefly at a picture of a moderately attractive woman printed on a red background, and the same woman then on a white, grey or green background. They also looked at a woman in red clothing, and the same one in blue clothing.
The men found the lady with a red background more attractive, both physically and sexually.
Comparing the woman in a red shirt to the same woman dressed in blue, men said they were more likely to ask the lady in red on a date and to lavish more money on her.
As part of one of the experiments, as well, the researchers sought to see whether a group of women were similarly more attracted to the woman shown against a red backdrop than a background of a different color. They were not.
What the researchers call the "red-sex link" could have roots in humans' biological heritage.
For instance, among primates, females display more red on parts of their body when they are nearing ovulation, probably to attract the male of the species.
"Research has shown that male primates are indeed particularly attracted to female conspecifics exhibiting red," the study says.
To the authors of the study, University of Rochester psychology professor Andrew Elliot and post-graduate researcher Daniela Niesta, the experiments' findings confirm what "women have long suspected and claimed: that men act like animals in the sexual realm."
And, they added, the fact that men are more turned on by women in red also confirms that, although men like to think that they respond to women "in a thoughtful and sophisticated manner, it appears that at least to some degree their preferences and predilections are, in a word, primitive."

steaky dinner and more wedding updates
we had a belated birthday celebration for daniel last weekend, and of course, he's always ready for steak (or lamb chops), this time round done in an american fashion. it seriously didn't feel that it has been one year since we gathered at angus house. and at the request of the birthday boy, we bought him enough short sleeved shirts for him to wear over one work week... it's time to revamp your wardrobe! heh. i hope we managed to chose shirts that are less ah-pek looking, although choices are kind of limited. we always get to hear hilarious/interesting/weird stories of people from all walks of life, i guess that's the kind of the life of a GP.
and to update on the wedding preparations, we managed to tie the ribbons for all the invites, two hundred over pieces! trust me, it's actually more tiring than it looks, even my mum was brought in to help!
oh yes, we've also decided on our wedding cake design and flavour after our cake tasting at pine garden's. it'll be a 4-tier 'cos i thought the 3-tier will probably look extremely tiny on stage and may not be enough to serve our 300+ guests, and we also had to pay extra to have the cakes on a acrylic stand as well. although we kind of burst our initial budget on the cake, what can beat cutting a REAL cake on your wedding day right? i hate the fake cake to start with. anyway, the 4-tier one should be able to feed 400, so we get to keep the little 4" top tier, and lychee martini flavour it'll be in! after testing various samples, we decided on triple layer chocolate (made from german imported chocolate), orange zest chocolate (a twist to the usual chocolate) and the wedding favourite lychee martini to be served to all the guests. all the layers will be coated in off-white, decorated with fuschia pink/burgundy flowers and the bottom of each layer will be lined with black lace - they call it the sexy glamour look... also to match the black/scarlet themed ballroom we have chosen (yes, we're not pantang, black it shall be!).

the wedding cake through history
taken from here.
The wedding cakes that we know and love today were not always the way they look or taste. The tradition of serving cake at a wedding goes all the way back to the ancient Greeks. The newly wed couple would cut a sesame seed cake together to symbolize fertility and happiness – it is from where we get our modern custom of cake cutting at a wedding.
However this custom was not always in vogue. The Romans did have a form of cake at their weddings, but instead of eating this wheat or barley cake, the groom would break it over the bride’s head. The crumbs that fell to the floor were then gathered up by the guests as tokens of good luck. A similar tradition of breaking a cake over the bride’s head continued for many centuries with some reports from Scotland dating as recently as the 19th century.
This custom slowly gave way to another whereby guests actually brought cakes to the reception. These cakes were then layered together using apple sauce – the higher the cake, the more popular the bride. Another custom that was widely popular during the Middle Ages involved the guests bringing sticky buns to the reception and piling them up in front of the happy couple. If the couple were able to kiss over the top they were supposed to be blessed with a long and happy marriage and many children.
In the eighteenth century brandied fruit cakes were a big hit because they were able to keep for so long. The Pilgrims brought this tradition over to the Americas and the fruit cake slowly evolved into the white, tiered cake that has come to symbolize wedding receptions.
Today the white cake has again evolved. Modern wedding cakes can be any color, any flavor and any style. They have become works of art and are prepared by skilled and talented cake designers who are eagerly sought by brides everywhere for their expertise and ability to turn an ordinary pastry into an incredible, edible creation.

bow tying
extracted from martha stewart wedding website:
Martha's Favorite Bow
Perfectly suited to wire-edge or stiff ribbons that hold their shape (taffeta, organdy, or grosgrain), Martha's favorite bow is charming when freestanding -- sewn to a bridesmaid's sash or attached to the side of a pew -- or as a wrapping for favor boxes; you'll need at least twelve inches of ribbon just for the bow. If wrapping a box, first tie a left-over-right half-knot.
Martha's Favorite Bow How-To
1. Shape two evenly sized loops, one in each side of the ribbon.
2. Cross right loop over left one.
3. Knot loops by threading right loop behind left one, under, and up through the hole; make sure ribbon is not twisted or bunched.
4. Pull loops into a smooth knot. Adjust loops; trim tails to be slightly longer than loops.

narcissism at its max?
well well, of some sort, but it was simply because we were bored waiting for K to arrive at suntec city, and too tired to do anymore walking. oh yes, and just wanted to show my new short "kiddy" fringe - he just snapped it off without really asking, but since he's also the one styling my hair for the big day, i'm not really worried... always ready for a good change. :-)
anyway, many concerned parties have been asking how's the preparations so far. all i can say is that everything is on schedule, meets stringent requirements and within estimated budget (sad to say, none of my OTHER projects run as smoothly!) - photography and wedding bands had been settled months back, e-mail invitation has recently been sent out and more than 60% of the guests have confirmed their attendence (if you think you should be invited but you have yet to receive anything, it might have ended up in your SPAM folder, haha... else you're so important that day you have no excuse not to show up!), we've confirmed the date for food tasting, when to meet up with pine garden's to discuss the cake design, sent out the wedding invitation card order form,... i guess that's the activities for this month. sending out of wedding invites and guo da li preparations are scheduled for next month. :-)
